Alphabetical Preparation Section deals with the preparation of bibliographic descriptions of Polish and foreign books and electronic documents. Current inflows to the Library and retrospective collections are processed. Cataloguing of documents is carried out in MARC 21 format in accordance with the current rules and standards for each category of library materials.
The main goal and task of the Alphabetical Preparation Department is to create and update the computerized library catalogue within the Virtua integrated library system.

Subject Preparation and Local Classification Section deals with subject preparation of current and retrospective collections with the use of MARC 21 format, based on the National Library's descriptors (DBN). The primary source of the descriptors is the Central Master Keyword Directory (CKHW). DBNs are also the result of a procedure that transforms the BN Subject Heading (HPBN) into a descriptor.
Classification of collections intended for the free access area is carried out using the Universal Decimal Classification (UKD).
The primary responsibilities of the Section also include the creation of bibliographies, based on the contents of the electronic database, for the purposes of accreditation and in situations of creating new courses at the university. The Section cooperates with the Alphabetical Preparation Section and the Free Access Department.
